Summer 2012 Recharge Weekend
August 10th to August 12th
The weekend recharge is open to all people who would like to learn about food addiction and practice being abstinent from addictive foods as well as those who want to strengthen their abstinence. Jeannette Mock, long-time recovering food addict and member of the Food Addiction Institute’s Professional Training, will facilitate the process groups. The event starts at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, August 10th and continues Saturday, August 11th, from 9:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. The recharge concludes with a session from 9:00 a.m. to noon on Sunday, August 12th. It will be held at a private residence in King Of Prussia, PA. The suggested donation is $100. Please contact Jeannette Mock at (804) 714-6469 for more information or to register.
For the past three years, the Food Addiction Institute has been holding weekend groups to support food addicts to recharge their recovery. There have been FAI recharge weekends in Sarasota, Florida; Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; Ocean City, New Jersey; and Richmond, Virginia. There is no fee. A donation to the FAI is requested.
The weekends are not therapy. They are workshops led by recovering food addicts for other recovering food addicts and for those who want to check out whether or not they are chemically dependent on food. They are for those not needing hospitalization or direct medical supervision to work on physical, emotional-mental, and spiritual issues of recovery in the addiction model.
The weekends follow the format of recharge weekends sponsored by residential food addiction treatment programs in the 1980’s and 1990’s. They are led by recovering food addicts with experience facilitating recovery groups, usually volunteers from the staff of professional food addiction recovery programs or members of the FAI/ACORN Food Addiction Professional Training Program.
At the weekend, everyone chooses an abstinent food plan. If they decide to use this after the weekend, they agree to check it out with their physician, dietician, or therapist. Participants commit their food specifically at the weekend to a peer sponsor in the group. There are process groups in which participants check in about whether or not they are abstinent, what they are feeling and the issues on which they would like to work. There is then an opportunity to work on their issues and get feedback from the group. At the end of the recharge, everyone makes a plan integrating their learning from the weekend into their recovery and their life.
